Noisy business owner prosecuted

A LAND owner who has made residents' lives hell with excessive noise has finally been prosecuted after dodging the courts nine times.

Amrik Johal, owner of Johal Skip Hire, was fined more than £9,000 after continuing to run his noisy waste transfer site on the Colnbrook bypass despite being served a noise abatement notice by the council.

Johal's case was heard in his absence after he failed to turn up for the 10th time owing to apparent ill health but he failed to submit medical evidence, prompting Maidenhead Magistrates Court to give the go-ahead.

He was found guilty of all five noise offences and fined £1,000 for each offence and £4,911 costs and was also successfully prosecuted by the Environment Agency for operating without a license.

Residents in the area had suffered months of loud noise from the site in Colnbrook, with banging and smashing of materials and noisy vehicles using the site, which accepts waste from skips.

Diane Viechweg, team leader for neighbourhood enforcement team at Slough Borough Council, said: "We are committed to ensuring residents do not suffer unduly with any noise which could spoil their home life. We are extremely pleased with the outcome of this case and hope it sends out a strong message to any other businesses operating in the area that we will not tolerate such conduct."
